Avon’s Roadrider a Track and Critical Success in 2010
Avon’s Roadrider is a comprehensive range of cross-ply tyres for road-going and classic racing motorcycles. During 2009, Avon decided to produce a number of different fitments, all V-speed rated, which would allow the retailer to carry much less stock but be able to cover a large number of diverse motorcycle models. This strategy was rewarded at the start of 2010 at the British Dealer News Industry Awards. Having polled more than 500 UK motorcycle dealerships the Avon Roadrider received a Certificate of Merit in the Best Aftermarket Product category.
Meanwhile during 2010 in the classic race scene a new soft compound of Roadrider in 90/90-19 and medium compound in 100/90-19 sizes have been fitted on classic racing machines such as the Manx Norton, AJS 7R and Matchless G50. Smaller machines like the BSA Bantam and Greeves Silverstone utilise the 90/90-18 size of Roadrider which are available in two compounds.
The racing year was capped with a title win in the British Historic Grand Prix Championship as well as the tyre scooping the top four places overall in the celebrated Goodwood Revival race. At the end of 2010 both sizes of Roadrider have won races in the classic race scene.
Speaking about the year, Avon’s Global Motorcycle sales manager Graham Matcham said: “For Roadrider to receive a Certificate of Merit at the start of the year was fantastic – and a real credit to Technical Product Manager for Motorcycle tyres Peter McNally and his team. It shows that the dealers and retailers appreciated the fact that we are trying to make stocking tyres less of a headache. On the circuits the race versions of Roadrider have also excelled. A lot of this success is due to our dedicated motorsport team led by Steve Smith, sales manager for Motorcycle Motorsport tyres, as they ensure that the Avon name is still winning races almost 100 years after we produced our first motorcycle tyre.”
