MAXAM Tyres On Show At Electra
There is a long tradition of mining in South Africa and the country is the world's leading producer of platinum, manganese and chrome, the second-largest producer of gold and the fourth-largest diamond producer. With such a history, it is fitting that South Africa plays host to the biennial Electra Mining Africa exhibition which, since its inception over 40 years ago, has grown to become South Africa's largest trade exhibition and the second largest mining show in the world.
The scale of the exhibition is huge, with over 650 exhibitors and well over 41,000 visitors. The most recent show was held between October 4-8 and attracted leading companies and personnel from the mining, construction and earthmoving sectors from across the globe.
One exhibitor was the MAI Group, the Verona-based manufacturer of MAXAM all-steel radial OTR tyres, and the company was represented at Electra Mining Africa by its distributor in South Africa, Tyre Source (Pty) Ltd., a specialist distributor of commercial, OTR and mining tyres.
MAXAM tyres are used on every continent in a number of OTR applications, including mining. Indeed, the MAXAM product range includes two tyres aimed specifically at the mining sector; the MineXtra MS501 and the MineXtra MS502. The MS501 has a traction profile for increased grip and the MS502 has a smooth profile, enhancing tyre life and durability.
Both tyres are designed to cope with the stress and strain of mine working and feature a rugged, all-steel radial construction with reinforced sidewalls, shoulders and beads as well as a special, extra deep, cut-resistant underground mine service tread.
The MAXAM range of tyres aroused considerable interest at the show and MAI Group CEO Ian Thomas described the event as “a vital part of MAI’s marketing strategy.” He went on: “The mining sector is an important market for us and Electra Mining Africa has proved an ideal showcase and a great opportunity for Tyre Source to promote our MAXAM tyres.”
