Trelleborg Introduces ‘Unique’ Production Technology at Enlarged Solid Tyre Plant
The consolidation of Trelleborg’s solid industrial tyre capacity in Sri Lanka has taken a further step forward with the opening of the enlarged Trelleborg Wheel Systems plant outside the city of Colombo. The company estimates that approximately 80 per cent of its total global solid industrial tyre production now is now carried out in Sri Lanka, a country it says is a “natural location” for it to consolidate production as it has an “excellent” raw materials infrastructure.
Both solid and pneumatic industrial tyres are produced in the expanded factory, and Trelleborg reports that production has been streamlined through the introduction of an entirely new technology for solid tyres. “The production technology we created at the unit is unique,” explained Trelleborg Wheel Systems’ business area president, Maurizio Vischi. “The many years and high expertise in production existing in the unit, combined with the new production method, result in both higher quality and more efficient productivity.”
For Trelleborg, the most important investments in the project were those focused on implementing the new production technology. Investment funds were also used to acquire additional land plus new production and storage areas. “Naturally, it is very inspiring for employees here to work in one of the largest production units for solid industrial tires in the world,” said Antonio E Garcia, head of Trelleborg Wheel Systems production unit in Sri Lanka. To also be involved in introducing the new production technology was very exciting.”
