Mercedes Truck UK Subject to Cartel Investigation
The Office for Fair Trading raided Mercedes-Benz’s UK headquarters this week as part of an investigation in alleged price fixing and cartel behaviour in the commercial vehicle industry. According to a Telegraph report the OFT has also requested information from Sweden’s Scania and Germany’s MAN.
One individual has reportedly been arrested and released on bail. The OFT confirmed the reports last night saying it is “investigating suspected cartel activity involving commercial vehicle manufacturers in the UK”. Investigations are being carried out under both the Enterprise Act 2002 and the Competition Act 1998 and are said to be at an early stage.
Companies involved in price-fixing can be fined 10 per cent of their turnover and executives guilty of criminal cartel behaviour face up to five years jail.
