Bulmer to Retire from UK Michelin Guide Editorship
Those who lazily assume all fine British food johnnies are male will be in for a rude shock upon hearing Michelin UK has appointed its first ever female editor for the Great Britain and Ireland, London, and Eating out in Pubs guides. The UK publication Caterer reports that as of October 1 Rebecca Burr will take over the role from Derek Bulmer, who is retiring after 33 years’ association with the guide.
Rebecca Burr has already notched up 12 years as a Michelin inspector, and worldwide she is Michelin’s third female editor – German Juilane Caspar oversees the French edition while in the USA a mysteriously anonymous woman lurks in the editorial shadows.
In addition to thanking Bulmer for his more than three decades of work on the guides, Michelin director Jean-Luc Naret and welcomed Burr to her new role. “Michelin used to be a bit of an old man’s club and in fact Derek was the first editor to include women in his team of inspectors so it’s largely thanks to him that we now have three female editors,” he told Caterer. “Part of Derek’s legacy is also how the industry in the UK has evolved over the years. It was under him that Michelin launched a dedicated London guide as well as a special guide for Eating out in Pubs.”
