No Award for Tyre Biting Boxer
Jojo the boxer has unfortunately failed to bring a tyre connection into the winner’s circle at this year’s Hambone awards. The three year old dog from Jacksonville, Florida was nominated for the distinction after catching the large UPS delivery truck he was chasing by biting into its tyre.
“I don’t know what Jojo was thinking when he bit that tyre,” said Jojo’s owner, Rebekah Hodges. “The delivery truck wasn’t moving fast, just pulling out of the driveway, but I guess it doesn’t take much to tear out a tooth.” Hodges took Jojo to the clinic, where a veterinarian cleaned the wound, repositioned the tooth and used wire to brace it in place against the surrounding teeth. All the veterinarians who treated Jojo reportedly told Hodges they had never seen an injury quite like his before.
Alas, Jojo’s tyre biting adventure was not deemed the most idiotic animal action of 2009. This Hambone Award, given out by the Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. in the US, went to Ellie, the Labrador retriever from California that ate an entire beehive and its thousands of inhabitants. Upon announcing her ‘victory’, the Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. said this: “Ellie may be a young dog, but she’s already managed to eat everything from wooden toy train tracks to laptop computer keys. So the beehive in the backyard was just another culinary adventure for this insatiable pooch.”
