Trucks Seized in UAE Tyre Safety Programme
During a two-week long tyre safety campaign held in the United Arab Emirates, police stopped and confiscated 1,099 trucks running on unsafe tyres. Tyre related faults are reported to be one of the main causes of accidents in the UAE, a problem compounded by the preference of many truck drivers for cheap but inferior quality tyres.
“The campaign was launched to ensure the safety of trucks’ tyres and drivers who did not conform to the safety standards of the traffic law were slapped with a Dh200 fine, and the vehicles were then impounded for one week,” Colonel Mohammad Eid Al Madhloum from the Sharjah Police told the Gulf News. “All trucks with worn out tyres were stopped and fined on the spot because the carelessness of truck drivers can lead to fatal accidents, especially during the summer. Now that it becomes hotter, the tarmac on the roads also heats up and can cause the tyres to burst if they are already worn out and in bad shape.
“The campaign was launched to combat the increasing number of accidents that occurred frequently,” Al Madhloum added.
