Tyremen Moves into 26,000 sq ft Premises
Tyremen Hull Ltd is expanding into new 26,000 square foot (2500 square metre) premises, reportedly creating “a new one stop shop for tyre services.” The new site in Witty Street, west Hull, just a few yards from one of the firm’s current sites, means the well established family tyre business in Hull is bringing all its services together under one roof. Currently, the company is split between three units in Witty Street, Anlaby Road and Argyle Street, however after the move is completed the three sites will be consolidated into one “huge” facility offering services such as tyres, alloy wheels, batteries, exhausts and wheel alignment.
By centralising all its work at the former Swedecor premises, Tyremen representatives say the company hopes to improve efficiency and increase work capacity. Tyremen was set up more than 40 years ago and is run by co-directors Lindsay Carlin and his son Phil.
“We have just had a good couple of steady years and business levels are increasing for us. Anlaby Road has changed a lot since my dad was first working here. Access is an issue and Witty Street is getting to the stage where the car parks are full and customers cannot get in. Then this site became available, which is perfect for us. It is across the road from our original site, so all our customers will still be able to find us,” Phil Carlin commented.
The current Witty Street site is a small garage style unit only fits six cars in. By comparison the new site is a significant step up and will fit about 15 vehicles in, whilst allow drive through access. All 17 Tyremen staff will work alongside one another at the new base and the company’s warehouse and storage will be on site, reducing supply issues, as Phil Carlin explains:
“We all get to the warehouse in the morning and get the tyres we need for the day and take them to our branches. Then later, someone runs out and we have to rush over with some more tyres. It was really inefficient, but having everything on the new site will stop us having to do all that running around.”
Increased online demand
Part of the reason the company needed to improve efficiency was the rising demand for its services via the internet. Since joining the company three years ago Phil Carlin has made developing Tyremen’s web presence a key focus. He believes the web generated business now accounts for about 30 per cent of the company’s turnover: “It has really taken off in the last year. I think the internet has been the main area of growth.” The company has also benefited from a close working relationship with Dutch tyre specialists Vredestein being one of a select group that Vredestein products in the UK.
