End of the Road – Bridgestone Ends Australian Production
Tyre production down under has come to an end with the closure of Bridgestone’s Salisbury factory in Adelaide. On April 30 the company held a private ceremony and barbeque for employees to mark the final day of operations. Many of the 600 or so workers, now out of work, were long-term Bridgestone employees, and emotions amongst staff were mixed.
“For most people it’s going to be a new lease of life,” said Ray Licis, who worked at the plant for 20 years. “Some of the older people are probably like me. I’m apprehensive a little bit. I’m not sure which way to go – getting down the track in age might be a little bit more of a barrier to getting work.”
Bridgestone Australia senior executive director Andrew Moffatt said the ceremony was held to pay tribute to the employees, many of whom have been given retraining for other employment. “Their contribution over so many years is to be admired and celebrated,” stated Moffatt. “We are particularly proud of the commitment they have shown since the announcement was made right through to today. Today is an emotional day for everybody. However, it is also a day of celebration as we reflect on many years of successful manufacturing here in Adelaide.”
