Tariffs – Are they Turning into a Game of Chicken?
An article published by Tire Review in the US indicates that Chinese officials may be guilty of ‘fowl play’ – anti-dumping duties have been added to chicken products imported from the United States, allegedly a direct response to the Obama Administration’s decision to add high tariffs – 35 per cent in the first year – over a three-year period on consumer tyres imported from China.
The duties, as high as 105.4 per cent, have been placed on whole birds, chicken sausage and other products including chicken feet, a delicacy in China. The China Commerce Ministry said the duties will begin on February 13.
China announced its plans to investigate American chicken imports shortly after the tyre tariffs were announced. A Chinese investigation concluded US chicken imports were being sold at prices that harmed Chinese competitors.
