David Bavaird and Gavin Marshall Launch Tyre Education for Schools Programme

David Bavaird, director of Scrap Tyre Exchange, has created a programme called TEFORS (Tyre Education for Schools) designed to teach children how a tyre works, the importance of tyre safety and the benefits of tyre recycling. TEFORS programme was launched this week at Battle Hill Primary School in North Tyneside, whose programme has been sponsored by neighbouring North Eastern Tyre and Autocare’s (NETA) Silverlink retail outlet.

Gavin Marshall, managing director of NETA says they were delighted to be the first to commit to the programme: “North Eastern Tyres has outlets across the North East and we were thrilled to be invited to be the first to take up the opportunity of being the first sponsor of what looks like becoming a hugely successful scheme. TEFORS will bring to life subjects such as science, safety and green issues in the classroom and will allow us to play a much closer role within the community where our retail outlet sits. We are thrilled to be launching this with Battle Hill Primary School.”

A & A Tyres provide life-line to local school

A & A Tyres in Cardiff, part of First Stop network of tyre dealerships, has come to the rescue of a local school who was at risk of losing one of its life lines, a mini-bus due to the increasing cost of running the vehicle. As well as replacing all the tyres on the mini-bus A & A Tyres is funding all of its maintenance which includes servicing, general maintenance and safety checks every eight weeks. The company has also offered to look after the rest of the school’s fleet of vehicles for a significantly reduced rate. This has enabled the school to keep the vehicle and ensure they are all safe-guarded for the future.

Tawse Tyres of Inverurie, Aberdeen has upgraded its existing Tyreman systems to the company’s version 12 program. Bryn Jones of Tyreman said: “One of the reasons why Tyreman is so popular with ambitious retail tyre chains and independents is because we work closely with each company to ensure they maximise the opportunities the software provides.”

MAI Sees Positive Results From Chinese Takeover

Since the Italian MAI Group acquired the OTR assets of China’s Shandong Jinyu Tire Co. Ltd. one and a half years ago, a few developments have occurred at the company's new production site. According to Ian Thomas, the Italian OTR tyre specialist’s head of sales and marketing, over the last 18 months production technology at the Dongying (Shandong Province) site has reached European levels. Investments have been made in shearography equipment and today in China the company is able to examine 100 per cent of the tyres it produces before delivery. Furthermore, MAI has placed several of its own top people into the acquired factory’s management, and the majority of engineers in its R&D department come from Turkey, where the Mai-Group already operates its second factory. Equally positive are the developments made in the compound used in China. “We are a European tyre manufacturer with a factory in China,” clarified Ian Thomas – the company, it would seem, has nothing in common with the “usual suspects” in China.

Meyle to intensify UK sales activities

German vehicle spare parts manufacturer Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG has reorganised its Meyle brand sales activities in the British aftermarket. In September the company launched its new UK subsidiary, Meyle UK Ltd. The local operation, headed by managing director David Ward, is responsible for the marketing of Meyle brand suspension and steering components, rubber-to-metal parts and brake system components. Meyle UK will, says the parent company, be able to “significantly improve supply capability of its complete range of 12,500 items to customers across UK,” including the 500 or so heavy duty parts that have been reengineered beyond their OE counterparts.

WHO Identifies Australian Scrap Tyres as an Asian Health Risk

Australia’s national broadcaster has reported on World Health Organization concerns that the country’s tyre industry and its trade with South East Asia is responsible for health hazards within the region. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s current affairs programme “The World Today”, some two-thirds of the scrap tyres generated in Australia each year – a quantity equalling 250,000 tonnes – are sent to Asian countries, and the quantity shipped there has tripled in the last 18 months.

SRI Increasing Tyre Prices in Global Markets

SRI Tire Trading Ltd. has announced that prices for its Dunlop, Falken, Sumitomo and Ohtsu brand tyres are increasing in numerous markets. The price increases take effect in November, however Sumitomo Rubber comments that the exact date will vary from country to country. The planned price increases apply to the passenger car, light commercial vehicle, truck and motorcycle tyre segments and will take place in Europe, North, Central and South America, Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Near and Middle East.

Reitzle Takes on Conti Supervisory Board Chairmanship

Although confirmed as the man for the job in September, the tenure of Prof. Dr. Ing. Wolfgang Reitzle as chairman of Continental AG’s Supervisory Board became official as of October 19 after his election during the day’s meeting. The Supervisory Board also made two other appointments during the October 19 meeting: Wolfgang Schäfer was confirmed as a regular member of the Continental AG Executive Board. He will take up his appointment on January 1, 2010, and will be responsible for the areas of finance, controlling, IT and law. Also assuming his position on the board next January 1 is José A. Avila, who is taking over as head of the Powertrain division.

Button Wins First F1 Title in Brazil Following Barrichello Puncture

Jenson Button overcame his worst qualifying performance of the 2009 Formula One season to collect a vital fifth-place finish; a placing that turned out to be decisive in this season’s Drivers Championship, as Sebastian Vettel and Button’s Brawn team-mate Rubens Barrichello – who started on pole in his home Grand Prix – failed to pick up enough points to take the fight to the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. Button started from 14th on the grid, but composure under pressure during an exciting race – coupled with Barrichello’s unfortunate puncture when he was in third place – allowed him to go into the final race of the season assured of his championship title. Barrichello had reason to smile too, though; their combined points also secured the Constructor’s Championship for Brawn GP in its debut season.

New Look, Logo Launched by ASA Tire Systems

(Tire Review) ASA Tire Systems has an all-new look, launching a fresh logo – its first revision since the company was formed 30 years ago. The software provider said the new look integrates elements from its TreadX, TireMaster and AutoRepairMaster products to create a more modern look. ASA Tire Systems said work on the new logo began after it launched a redesigned website last year. “The new look for ASA continues the evolution of our brand and brings our product lines closer together in the software suite of ASA Tire Systems,” said Wayne Croswell, president. ASA Tire Systems said it will fully integrate the new look by the end of the year.

New Executive, President for Arkansas Dealer Group

(Tire Review) Still mourning the sudden loss of long-time executive director Nelson “Bulldog” Drummond, the Arkansas Independent Tire Dealers Association has named a new executive leader. Eddie Warrington was hired in August by the AITDA board of directors as its new executive director. Warrington was a member of AITDA for 28 years and served a term as president in 1991. With the resignation of president Eric Street, the AITDA also named first vice president Dennis Bartlett as president. Bartlett, president of Bartlett Tire Center in Heber Springs, Ark., will serve out the remainder of Street’s term, and then complete his own through 2010. With the change in leadership, the AITDA has a new address: #2 Robinwood, Searcy, AR 72143, USA.

Michelin Educates Large Fleet Customer, Lloyds TSB Autolease in Tyre Safety

Michelin recently held a three-day event in association with ATS Euromaster at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) for one of its largest fleet customers, Lloyds TSB Autolease (now LEX Autolease). The objective, says the tyre-maker, was to raise awareness of the importance of tyres and tyre pressures in terms of safety and environmental impact. Each day, 25 of Lloyds TSB Autolease’s customers visited the test facility in Warwickshire to take part in interactive workshops covering subjects including tyre wear and damage, tyre construction and the steps Michelin is taking to reduce the environmental impact of its tyres throughout their life (from rubber plantation to disposal).

German Hillclimb Championship won on Avon Tyres

Osella BMW PA20/S driver, Joerg Weidinger has clinched the German Hillclimb title for the 2009 season on Avon tyres, finishing third at the final race of the season in Mickausen. Weidinger said, “I am delighted to win the title and I want to thank Avon Tyres and all who have been involved in the 2009 season. The tyres were brilliant and thank you for developing such great tyres for my race. It has been of great satisfaction to myself and my team.” Avon Tyres are the chosen racing tyre of 250 motorsport champions across Europe every year, in categories as diverse as the British GT Championship, FIA European Rallycross Championship, Formula Ford and historic racing.

Conti Sime Opens BestDrive Continental Car Centre in East Malaysia

On 18 October Bintang Ramai Sdn. Bhd., in partnership with Continental Sime Tyre Sdn. Bhd. (CST) opened the first BestDrive passenger car and Light Truck (PLT) centre in East Malaysia. The new branch is the 16th BestDrive in Malaysia, but the first in Eastern Malaysia. According to Benoit Henry, CEO of CST, the BestDrive PLT centre empowers the company’s partners with the opportunity to use its brand to position themselves as uniform, specialised tyre dealers catering for the premium customer segment. CST aims to offer expertise and advice for the setup of a premium BestDrive shop concept, shop layout and customer-friendly tyre-changing and car-service environment.
