Delticom AG-owned Mytyres.co.uk has added a number-plate fitment option allowing drivers to find suitable tyres using just a car’s registration. Mytyres is obviously aiming to demystify the tyre buying process by offering an easier way of finding out which consumers need. Adopting this style means Mytyres joins the list of companies already using similar systems (including National Tyres’ online presence amongst others). The move also marks the beginning of trend in the market towards offering this. Tire Group International (TGI) has opened a new sales office in Houston, Texas headed by Tom Wilbur. Wilbur comes to TGI with over 12 years experience in the tyre industry, having worked for firms such as Area Wholesale Tire and Tire Dealers Warehouse.

Tyrepac Launches Hong Kong Mobile Tyre Service

Tyrepac, reputedly Asia’s first online tyre portal, has launched a mobile service in Hong Kong. “We are extremely pleased to now offer the same convenience as consumers in Singapore [where the company is based]…to consumers in Hong Kong.” said Tyrepac managing director and co-founder, Ler Hwee Tiong. According to the company, battery change and “a host of other services on top of the tyre changing” will soon be offered.

Bridgestone Australia Welcomes Government Assistance Package

Bridgestone Australia says it welcomes an October 27 announcement by South Australian Premier Mike Rann offering State and Federal Government assistance for employees affected by the closure of the company’s Salisbury factory. The state Premier outlined the package during discussions with senior Bridgestone executives, and according to Bridgestone Australia senior executive director Andrew Moffatt the assistance offered will “complement” the company’s stated commitment to its employees.

Bridgestone “Happy” with MotoGP Tyre Performance following Rossi Sepang Lap Record

In addition to sealing the MotoGP Riders Championship with his third place at the weekend, Valentino Rossi managed an outright lap record in qualifying on Saturday, suggesting to Bridgestone manager of the Motorcycle Tyre Development Department, Tohru Ubukata that tyre performance had been good: “Yes, in general I am happy with the performance of both our available compounds this weekend, but Valentino’s lap was very impressive indeed. The track temperature at the end of the session was 52 degrees Celsius, yet Valentino set his fastest lap on the softer front tyre and the softer rear tyre which shows that even in the high heat they had a suitable level of durability and good overall performance.

Russian Tyre Imports Crash 8.6% in 1H 2009

With the Russian economy fairing worst that most at the moment, the tyre business in this part of the world has taken a similarly significant hit, with both imports and exports falling heavily in the first half of 2009. Tyre manufacturers appear to have been offering significant discounts (or exporting lower value items) in the first half of 2009 with unit export figures falling far slower than export values. Data compiled by the Russian Discovery Research Group shows exports totalled 3,259,440 units in the first half of 2009, down 8.6 per cent from 3,566,469 units in the first half of 2008. Meanwhile, passenger-car tyre exports fell 7.1 per cent in the period, with truck tyre exports down 14.9 per cent. Exports of light truck tyres countered the trend, growing 40 per cent.

Kumho Tire USA Appoints Armand Allaire as National Sales VP

Industry veteran Armand Allaire has joined Kumho Tire USA as the national vice president of sales, reports Tire Review. Most recently Allaire was vice president of sales for Toyo Tire USA, and previously was a sales and marketing director for the then Bridgestone USA Inc. “Armand brings a unique blend of salesmanship and management experience to Kumho,” said JB Kim, Kumho's president and CEO, “we look forward to his guidance and vision as we build Kumho Tire for the future.”

Apollo Tyres Sees Profit Hike in July-September, Predicts Big Things for 2010

After witnessing a substantial jump in profits from the quarter ending 30 September 2009, Indian tyre manufacturer Apollo has suggested that more is to come in 2010. The company told Indian business news sources that it will be aiming for 50 per cent higher revenues for its financial year (ending March 2010) thanks to the effect of its new-ish European subsidiary, Vredestein Banden, which the company acquired on 15 May.

BTC Completes Network Rollout

Bandvulc Tyre Contracts has recently completed establishing a network of road transport industry tyre suppliers. The company has evolved its network after what it refers to as a “rigorous selection process” involving every aspect of the suppliers’ operations. The project saw 21 key service providers supply all of the necessary pre-requisite documents and evidence of procedures in order that BTC could award levels of performance in key service areas.

Schaeffler and IG Metall Form Joint Committee

Schaeffler Group and the IG Metall union agreed to form a joint committee which, according to the company, “represents the first joint step towards the agreed implementation of co-determination in the company. The joint committee consists of six representatives from each party and is intended for the exchange of information about issues related to the economic situation and further development of the Schaeffler Group. A representative of the Schaeffler Group will act as the chairman and an employee representative will be deputy chairman of the committee. The joint committee will hold four ordinary meetings per year.

Alliance Tire Buys GPX Assets

Just a day after GPX International Tire Corporation (GPX) filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Israel-based Alliance Tire Group announced it has signed an agreement to purchase certain assets for a reported $38.3 million. According to Alliance, the deal includes: “GPX’s US operations, customer relationships, warehouse footprint, worldwide rights to the Galaxy and Primex brands, the company’s medium radial truck tyre distribution business and the Company’s South African entity, GPX Tyre South Africa (Pty.).”

According to GPX the purpose of entering chapter 11 was “to separate the company’s operations into three distinct businesses in order to facilitate the sales of those businesses in transactions, which will allow 95 per cent of the company’s current North American workforce to remain employed.” Crucially, the statement points out that “the company will wind down its European operations.” GPX also explained that it has buyers lined to purchase various parts of the business.

Research Tips 8.21% Growth in India Until 2013

India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association has predicted tyre consumption in the subcontinent will grow by five to six per cent in the coming months, yet information collated by Indian based business research firm CARE Research indicates that growth may reach a slightly higher rate. According to the company’s research, India’s tyre industry is expected to grow at 6.81 per cent in the 2010 financial year and at a compound annual growth rate of 8.21 per cent until the 2013 financial year.

Blackcircles: 60 per cent of Drivers Now Considering Part Worns and Retreads

Nearly 60 per cent of motorists would now consider buying part-worn or retread tyres for their cars, compared to just 35 per cent three years ago. That’s the conclusion of a study conducted by online tyre retailer Blackcircles.com, published to coincide with Tyre Safety Month. Publicising the conclusions of the data in an official statement, Blackcircles MD Mike Welch made the expected warnings about part worn quality, but made a surprising comparison with what he called “sub standard” retreads.

“Buying part worn tyres and retreads might seem like a thrifty alternative to new tyres but it’s vital that motorists also understand the risks. Part-worns and retreads are effectively second hand – they have already been used for an unspecified number of miles with a different vehicle and so are inherently sub-standard compared to brand new models,” Welch commented, adding:
