Bridgestone Helping Meals on Wheels Battle Hunger in US

Every day in the United States of America, one in nine senior citizens – an astonishing five million people – face the threat of hunger. And it is projected that 75 per cent more seniors will be facing the threat of hunger by 2025. In an effort to combat this disgraceful and growing problem, Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC (BSRO) and the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) – the oldest and largest organisation in the United States representing those providing meal services to people in need – have announced a national partnership.

Revised Toyo Figures Show Improved Profitability

Toyo Tire & Rubber has made a number of revisions to the consolidated performance forecasts for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010 (April 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009) that it released on May 11, 2009. Predicted net sales have been bumped down 7.4 per cent, or 10.4 billion yen (£69.7 million) to 129.6 billion yen (£868.3 million). Despite this reduction in sales, however, operating loss is expected to decrease from 2.8 billion yen to 1.3 billion yen (£8.7 million). Ordinary loss will also diminish, from 4.1 billion yen to 1.3 billion yen. Net loss also decreases from 4.2 billion yen to 2.0 billion yen (£13.4 million).

Goodyear Stock Plummets following CFO’s Operating Income Q4 Prediction

Shares in Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co experienced the sharpest fall in New York trading for 22 years following chief financial officer Darren Wells’ prediction that income in North America will decline between $75 million and $125 million compared to third quarter results in the period October-December 2009. The company therefore forecasts an operating loss in North America during the fourth quarter. Wells made the statement during a conference call with analysts today discussing the results of 2009’s third quarter.

Goodyear Reports Improvement in Q3, but Decline Vs 2008 Continues

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s third quarter 2009 financial report showed sales and income improvements in comparison with quarter two, but the results continue to reflect what the company calls “weak industry demand”. Accentuating the positive, Goodyear states that it “sees opportunities as markets recover”, an idea reflected in the company’s launch of 57 new products over the course of the first three quarters of 2009 (15 in quarter three), a figure that surpasses the full-year target. Additionally, Goodyear has improved its liquidity, made year-to-date savings totalling $540 million and reduced its inventories by more than $1 billion in the period, while producing a third quarter segment operating income of $275 million, a figure that shows improvement on 2008, with sales 11 per cent up from quarter two at $4.4 billion.

South American Tyre Industry Expo Taking Reservations

The ninth International Tyre Industry Expo in South America, PneuShow is set to take place in São Paulo, Brazil between 13 and 16 April, 2010 at the Expo Center Norte. The event will also include its second international tyre industry convention. Calling itself “the most important show for the tyre industry in South America”, PneuShow Recaufair’s exhibitors will include representatives from the tyre and wheel trades, including special application and industrial products; repair and retreading materials, machinery and moulds; and servicing and recycling equipment and tools. In 2008, the event had 100 exhibitors in a space of 4,500 sqm, with 10,800 visitors.

Expansion at JK Tyre Facility Complete – For Now

JK Tyre has completed the expansion of its facility in Mysore, India, more than doubling radial capacity to eight hundred thousand units per annum. Yet the nation’s growing acceptance of radial technology means additional capacity is still welcome: Company marketing director A.S. Mehta reports around Rs 2 billion (£26 million) will be invested in further expansion during the next 18 months in order to boost capacity by a further two hundred thousand pieces.

OM Recycling Investigated following Residents’ Concerns over Tyre Storage

OM Recycling’s tyre recycling depot in Mayobridge, County Down, Northern Ireland is facing an investigation by the Environmental Crime Unit following residents’ complaints. OM Recycling has around 400,000 tyres stockpiled at the facility, some of which are stored outside the company’s licensed area, say BBC news reports. The Environment minister Edwin Poots told Auntie of the “significant risk to human health and the environment” posed by the tyre pile, while SDLP councillor Josephine O’Hare said she was aghast at the quantities of tyres, though “nobody wants to stop anybody doing their business”. OM Recycling responded that it is co-operating with the Environment Agency and that it is committed to resolving issues at its “secure” site.

Organisers Anticipate 10,000 Visitors at Shandong Province Show

A new show catering to those with an interest in Chinese produced tyres and automotive components will debut next year. Called the China (Guangrao) International Rubber Tire & Auto Accessory Exhibition, the government organised show will take place at the Gurangrao International Expo Center on 9 – 11 May 2010. The exhibition area is anticipated to be as much as 11,000 square metres and host around 300 exhibitors. The organiser predicts more than ten thousand buyers and visitors will attend over the exhibition’s three days.

Illegal Tyre Storage Penalties High for Yorkshire Man

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner has reported that an area man has been given an ultimatum by the courts; remove 5,500 illegally stored used tyres from his Honley dumping ground or go to prison. A crown court judge ordered Kyriacos Kyrianou to remove the tyres in April, having been fined £5,000 in November 2007 for storing up to 15,000 tyres on the same site. While Krianou defended himself, saying that previous fines and legal costs have left him unable to afford to remove all the tyres, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC was unwilling to cut him any slack yesterday at Bradford Crown Court, bluntly stating: “Get rid of the tyres and I will consider an alternative to sending you to prison. If you don’t remove the tyres you will back me into a corner. If they are gone, job done, if not you are taking the Mickey, to put it bluntly, and I will send you to prison.”

Formula One in Abu Dhabi “Strategically Important” for Bridgestone

While the final Grand Prix of the Formula One season could be thought of as a dead rubber – Jenson Button and Brawn GP having sewn up the Drivers and Constructors Championships in Brazil – the event holds substantial interest for tyre provider Bridgestone, as the company heads to Yas Marina for the first ever meeting at Abu Dhabi. The new 5.5km circuit, described as “exciting” by the tyre-maker, will see 1,800 tyres of medium, soft and wet compound Potenzas between 30 October–1 November and the company will be keen to see how the rubber performs, with the venue sure to see more action in the coming seasons, in addition to the strategic importance of the Middle East region to the manufacturer. The combination of medium and soft has been seen previously this year in Belgium and Italy.

Safety Record at Goodyear China Plant Site Praised

An important milestone in the safety record at Goodyear’s newest tyre manufacturing facility has been acknowledged: More than one million hours at the site of the company’s Puladian, China plant, now under construction, have been worked without a recordable accident. An award marking this blemish-free record was jointly given by Goodyear and the SSOE Group, the company providing full engineering, procurement, construction management (EPCM) services for the project, to BVEC Piling Contractors, who accepted it on behalf of the on-site workforce.

Tire Rack Tests Yokohama’s Orange Oil Tyre in 'Real World Ride'

Yokohama Tire Corporation's (YTC) eco-friendly dB Super E-specT tyre, which is made of 80 per cent non-petrol products, scored well in a recent low rolling resistance test conducted by US retailer Tire Rack. "The Tire Rack test shows that the dB Super E-spec, which introduces new technology in tyre materials and design, is noticeably better on all-around performance," said Mark Chung, YTC director, corporate strategy and planning. "Compared to standard tyres on a Prius, both the fuel efficiency and handling are improved, and compared with other conventional tyres that offer enhanced fuel efficiency, the dB Super E-Spec excels in driving performance.”

Russian Nokian Workers Given Chance to Become ‘Village’ People

Nokian tyres has unveiled its brand new housing complex built for workers at its factory in Vsevolozhsk, Russia. Known as ‘Hakkapeliitta Village’, the 167 apartments are located some ten kilometres from the plant and cover a total area of 10,300 square metres. The company has invested more than ten million euros into the project in the aim of attracting and retaining qualified staff at the facility; a Nokian press release explains that in exchange for a commitment to remain at the plant for at least seven years, employees can purchase an apartment within the complex for substantially less than the average market price.
