Bridgestone to Boost India Capacity

Bridgestone is reported have its eyes on a third of India’s growing passenger car market, and is increasing both capacity and its nationwide dealership network in order to accommodate this. The Press Trust of India reports some Rs 2.59 billion (£33.6 million) is to be invested in the company’s Pithampur facility in order to boost production 40 per cent to 15,000 tyres per day by the middle of next year. “The Indian market is our top priority in the Asia-Pacific region,” Bridgestone Asia Pacific general manager for Consumer Marketing Department Yoshihiro Tanabe told PTI. “We are going to put more focus on the Indian market than ever and are considering and discussing many possibilities for expansion.''

Ex-Conti CEO Neumann Takes on VW Role

On December 1 Karl-Thomas Neumann, former chief executive of Continental AG, will start in a new role with Volkswagen. Neumann will take on the newly created role of group chief officer for electric traction, and in this position will report directly to VW CEO Martin Winterkorn. This is not the first time that Neumann, who left Conti in August, has worked with the carmaker – he held various positions within the Volkswagen’s electronics operation between 1999 and 2004.

GPX International to Sell Solid Tyre Business

GPX International Tire Corporation CEO Craig Steinke has announced the company’s entry into a “definitive sale agreement for its Solid Tire business and Starbright manufacturing facility in China”. Steinke states “an investor group will partner with members of the management team to purchase the operations and underlying assets of the Solid Tire business.” The transaction will include the MITL, ITL and Brawler brands, as well as the Gorham, Maine; Red Lion, Pennsylvania; and Hebei, China manufacturing facilities.

Lanxess Results Show Upward Trend

In the third quarter of 2009 Lanxess AG reports delivering a “strong operating performance”, with EBITDA pre exceptionals of 143 million euros. The specialty chemicals company had expected third quarter operating earnings in the vicinity of the 112 million euros earned in the second quarter. EBITDA pre exceptionals were down 26 per cent year-on-year but rose 28 per cent from the second quarter due to an improved macroeconomic environment worldwide, driven by China, as well as savings yielded by the company’s “Challenge09-12” package of measures, which are expected to cut Lanxess’s costs worldwide by about 360 million euros by 2012. Another key performance metric – EBITDA pre exceptionals margin – was 10.4 per cent; higher than the previous quarter and nearly reaching last year’s level.

UK Motorists Amongst the Worst Tyre Safety Offenders in Europe – Michelin

Last year the Michelin Fill Up With Air campaign showed 35 per cent of motorists to be driving around on dangerously under inflated tyres. Yet despite the French manufacturer’s very worthwhile efforts, the tyre safety message just doesn’t seem to be sinking in – Michelin’s 2009 Fill Up With Air campaign results reveal that this figure has crept up to 36 per cent.

Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Soars in Australian Test

Australia’s Motor Magazine has published its 2009 tyre test, and Goodyear is quite pleased about how its Eagle F1 Asymmetric has faired up. The Goodyear tyre scored 131.4 points across all the test categories, almost a full 17 points ahead of the next best performer, Dunlop’s SP Sport Maxx GT.

SMMT Welcomes Government Support For Automotive Industry

Government has committed to create an Automotive Council to strengthen engagement with industry and set a long-term plan for its development. This follows its endorsements of the New Automotive Innovation and Growth Team's (NAIGT) recommendations on the development of the sector over the next 20 years. NAIGT, consisting of a cross-industry group of senior executives, produced the report earlier this year setting out a framework for industry development to ensure it maximises the opportunities presented by the transition to a low carbon agenda, and to promote the UK as a key player in a global industry.

Ashcroft Appointed Conti UK & Ireland Truck OE Manager

Continental Tyre Group has appointed Steve Ashcroft to the role of OE manager for its UK & Ireland truck tyre business. In his new position, Ashcroft will liaise directly with both manufacturers and fleets on all OE truck and trailer activities. Commenting on his appointment, Ashcroft commented: “It’s an interesting time to be taking on the OE Manager role, but my years of experience as well as the insight gained from working in both the manufacturing and supplier side of the business, I’m convinced will be of great benefit.”
