New Zealand Survey: Unroadworthy Tyres on 16% of Vehicles
According to a survey conducted by Goodyear Dunlop in New Zealand, some 16 per cent of all vehicles in the country’s major centres have at least one unroadworthy tyre. The 1,600 vehicles surveyed in the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch showed a 40 per cent increase in tyre-related defects over a similar survey conducted in 1999.
Goodyear Dunlop Tyres NZ marketing manager Jamie Stewart commented that the survey’s findings reflect recent tyre sales and perhaps show a change of spending priorities over the past 12 months. “Our 2009 market research has shown that people are prepared to take the risk and put off replacing worn-out tyres,” said Stewart. “This survey supports that and is a timely reminder for those who will be driving over the Christmas break to get a free tyre check from Beaurepaires, or any tyre outlet, and replace worn tyres.
“When you consider that one in seven cars you pass on the road has at least one bad tyre, it puts this result into perspective,” Stewart added. “Tyres are a bit of a grudge purchase for many consumers but they’re the only thing connecting you and your passengers to the road.”
