Forth US Conti Tyre Verified for SmartWay List
A fourth commercial vehicle tyre from Continental Tire North America, the HTL1 super single trailer tyre, has been added to the US Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Transport Partnership list of verified technologies for tyres. The HTL1, which, replaces dual tyres on highway or regional trailer axle fitments, joins Conti’s HSL2, HDL Eco Plus and HTL Eco Plus in this group of low rolling resistance tyres – this means that Continental now has a SmartWay verified tyre for all three truck axle positions.
SmartWay accreditation is given to tyres that can provide a reduction in NOx emissions and an estimated fuel savings of three per cent or greater, relative to the “best selling” new tyres for line haul trucks. Making this environmental cut is decided based upon data provided by tyre manufacturers and through EPA testing and research. As a result of this EPA verification and inclusion on the SmartWay list, the HTL1can be used to meet the California Air Resources Board regulations for low rolling resistance tyres.
Continental also demonstrates its commitment to the SmartWay Transport Partnership as a shipper of goods and materials. The tyre maker first joined the partnership in June 2008 as a ‘Shipper Partner’, committing to reduce its environmental impacts from ground freight transportation. In joining the partnership, Continental agreed to use the Freight Logistics Environmental and Energy Tracking (FLEET) Performance Model for Shippers to quantify its environmental performance level. In its first year of participation, Continental exceeded its goal of compliance and achieved a FLEET score of 1.14 out of a maximum of 1.25.
