Micheldever Feature on BBC Breakfast TV
Micheldever Tyre Services and the AA, teamed up with the BBC to produce almost 18 minutes of BBC news coverage on Saturday 31 October. The coverage began on BBC 1, centring on the estimated 3.6 million illegal tyres running on UK roads, and was repeated on BBC News24 and the BBC website.
The BBC Breakfast news team filmed at the Micheldever’s Hampshire site, interviewing CEO Paul Fox, Marc Ainslie and a customer and pointing out the very real dangers of driving on bald or defective tyres.
Paul Fox reflected on recent company research, “In September 2007, we were taking off approximately 23 per cent of front tyres that were down to an illegal tyre tread depth. In 2008, it had risen to 55 per cent and now 12 months on, well through the recession, we’re seeing levels of about 65 per cent of illegality.”
The report also saw Stewart Topp, named AA Patrol of the Year in April, admits that he is worried about the situation. “In this current economic climate, people are neglecting their vehicles. If the car’s reliable, they just tend to leave it,” he said, adding: “It’s a safety issue. [Tyres are] the only things keeping you on the road so it’s important to get them checked and changed if necessary.
