Londonderry Fire Finally Extinguished
The tyre fire that has been burning since Sunday at a site in Londonderry where tyres were being stored illegally has finally been extinguished. Firefighters arriving to tackle the blaze on Sunday night found four separate fires across the one-acre site at Eglinton. The fire service said tackling the blaze had been a "mammoth task" and the cost of the operation is expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.
An investigation will now begin into whether the fire was started deliberately. The site was being sub-let and did not apparently have the necessary licenses for storing tyres. It was a narrow escape for a neighbouring company Perfecseal, which makes medical packaging for pacemakers and cardio-vascular stents, as any contamination from smoke would have meant closing the building for weeks to clean it thoroughly. Steps were being taken to hermetically seal the building completely, but fortunately firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze before any contamination occurred.
