Cooper Tire Test Driver Wins Westfield Series
Cooper Tire’s development test driver, Chris Davison has won the 2009 Westfield Sportscar Series. Davison’s day job involves driving quickly and consistently so that Cooper can evaluate the development of new tyres, giving him a significant amount of practice that was clearly put to excellent use. The title was decided between Sutton-born Davison and title contender Simon Pryke, from Leicester.
As the lights went out, Davison made an electrifying start from second on the grid to take the lead in the first corner. While Pryke settled into his own battle for third, Davison and Russell Small – who was racing in a different class – led a nail biting battle at the front, giving a good show for the spectators as they swapped the lead several times throughout the race. After a close battle, Davison scored his seventh class victory from 12 races, ensuring the title was his.
“Going into the final two rounds at Snetterton I was really confident that I could win the series, but I knew that Simon wasn’t going to give it away,” said Davison. “My strategy for both races was to drive like I normally do – flat out – and try and put the celebrations to the back of my mind. It was a great racing with Russell and he definitely made it an exciting final.
“I would like to thank Team Ringtours.co.uk and team owner Ian, for all their hard work this year. From the disaster at Rockingham, when my engine blew, I thought my season was over before it had even started! The team pulled together and the title happened for us at the final round at Snetterton.”
