Nokian Tyres Offer Slush-Planing Protection
Nokian has introduced new sizes of two "green" high performance winter tyres, which the company says are its safest yet – the WR G2 and, for SUVs, the W RG2 SUV. The WR G2, says Nokian, is particularly effective against "slush-planing" and aquaplaning and offers a shorter braking distance in the wet as well as improved snow grip. Its eco credentials include reduced fuel consumption, thanks to the tyre's reduced rolling resistance, plus it has a longer tread life. Three new 15" and 16" sizes have been added to the WR G2 range, which now comprises 67 sizes for rims from 14" to 20" and speed ratings from T to W.
For SUVs, the WR G2 has the same advantages, including a 10 per cent lower rolling resistance compared to premium competitors according to Nokian, and is available in 28 sizes for rims from 15″ to 22″.
Slush planning is very dangerous and Nokian cites a study by the Tampere University of Technology, which says that the risk of a serious accident is almost seven times greater on a slushy road. The WR G2 has seven innovations for safer winter driving and these are the ‘slush edge’, ‘wipe sipe’, 3D self-locking siping, power on/off stabiliser, a silica-canola oil compound, an asymmetrical tread pattern and polished grooves.
The slush edge removes heavy slush, the wipe sipes wipe the water off the road during braking and the power on/off stabiliser improves safety during rapid acceleration. The special compound is produced without carcinogenic aromatic oils, but with natural canola oil and silica. A snowflake symbol at the bottom of the tread grooves gives the motorist a visual warning when the tread depth is low.
