Tyres to be Used in Construction of “Rubbish” Church
We’ve been praying for this to happen…a church north of Glasgow has decided to build its new place of worship out of old tyres and other waste products. Colston Milton Parish Church will find out on August 28 whether its new building project has obtained Glasgow City Council approval, and should the blessing for it to proceed be given, construction should start next summer.
The building’s sanctuary will be largely constructed from old passenger car tyres, while other parts of the structure will be made from straw bales and old shipping containers. Eco-friendly parishioners have also gathered almost half a tonne of beer cans for use in construction. “The response from the people of Milton has been fantastic,” commented the church’s Reverend Christopher Rowe. “People of all ages have been helping collect old cans from the woods and bringing them in from home.”
“This time last year we were just dreaming and people thought our ideas were a bit mad but we have now shown that it can be done,” Rowe added. “Our new building may be ‘pure rubbish’ but it is also beautiful, we will be taking unwanted things and using them to create something new and exciting.”
