Swinton Survey Outs Van Tyre Safety Ignorance
According to a recent poll of 1,000 commercial van driving customers, Swinton Insurance has revealed that 25 per cent of the segment never checked the condition or tread of their tyres, while 42 per cent did not know the correct legal tread depth.
While only 9 per cent admitted that they never check their tyre pressure – much better on average than passenger car drivers – the figures still show that there is some way to go before tyre safety awareness reaches an acceptable level, including those whose livelihood depends on the good condition of their vehicle.
Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton said, “Van drivers tend to clock up more miles than other road users therefore it is vital that they carry out routine safety checks on their vehicle. Low tyre tread depth can be extremely dangerous in wet weather conditions and given the ever-changing weather this summer we would urge van drivers to inspect their tyres on a regular basis. Failing to maintain a commercial vehicle properly increases the risk of an accident which will ultimately affect future van insurance premiums.”
