US State Extends Tyre Scrapping Fee
The US state of Missouri’s House of Representatives has approved the extension of a scrap tyre fee for a further decade. The tyre disposal legislation originally introduced in 1990 gives authority for a fifty-cent fee to be collected from retailers of new tyres, and was set to expire on January 1, 2010. The House of Representatives passed the extension bill by 149 votes to 5 on May 5.
Current law allows Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources to use up to 25 per cent of its portion of the fees collected to remove tyres from illegal tyre dumps and address nuisances created by these dumps. The extended act increases the percentage of funding that may be used for these purposes to 50 per cent. Similarly, the act increases the amount of its fee revenue that the Department may spend on grants to people who will use products made from scrap tyres from 5 to 45 per cent.
