Toyo Builds on “Fastest SUV” Fitment
Toyo retained its title as tyre of the “fastest SUV in the world” with the Proxes S/T on Sportec’s modified Porsche Cayenne Turbo at high speed oval course, the ATP in Germany. Selected for its ability to deliver the handling and stability required of a 4×4 of the modified Cayenne’s magnitude, the Proxes range exemplifies the ultra-high performance range of Toyo’s 4×4 line, though the company also recognises that not all off road vehicles are driven by off-road enthusiasts; it carries a wide range of tyres to suit all sectors of the 4×4 market, whether it is a sporty tyre for those who rarely venture away from the tarmac, or a true off-roader who loves to tear around the muddy terrains.
Toyo’s Proxes S/T is the manufacturer’s concession to those who prefer “to sport a set of sexy aftermarket alloys.” The tyre is formulated to offer a high speed rated rubber with a secure and stable ride on wet or dry roads. As mentioned before, its dynamics were demonstrated best when it was fitted to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo that broke its own SUV speed record at 191.65mph. The tyre is available in sizes from 16” to the sort of thing you see in a rap music video, at 23”.
The all season Open Country H/T (Highway Terrain) was designed as a road tyre offering a long life and a comfortable ride. Suggested for use on 4x4s and SUVs, Toyo says that the tyre would also be suitably used on vans and light trucks. It is available in sizes between 15” and 22”. The Highway Terrain’s cousin, the Open Country A/T (All Terrain) is offered as the range’s all-rounder for users sometimes needing off-road mobility. The tyre boasts improved wet braking and superior traction in off road conditions, alongside high ride comfort and tyre life. Toyo says that it is “the off road tyre that thinks it’s a road tyre,” for pickups, vans and sports utility vehicles. It is available in a range of sizes between 14” and 24”.
The Open Country range also includes a W/T (Winter Terrain) and an M/T (Mud Terrain) version, providing additional seasonal and sticky underfoot capabilities. The W/T is designed to offer maximum grip in cold and wet conditions, with an asymmetrical tread pattern giving the tyre firm ground contact for increased handling and traction on slippery roads. The silica based compounds in the tread also offer enhanced braking on wet roads and work particularly well on vehicles equipped with ABS. It is available in sizes between 15” and 20”. Meanwhile the M/T was designed for 4×4 vehicles tackling wet, muddy conditions, with tread blocks producing powerful traction, allowing the vehicle to drive out of heavy mud. It is available from 15” to 17”. The Tranpath M/T (Mud Terrain) also offers similar features in a range of 15” and 16” sizes not available on the Open Country M/T.
OE business
Toyo also boasts a number of original equipment contracts in its 4×4 range. The Tranpath A11 is an exclusive design used as standard equipment on the luxurious LexusRX300. The quiet-running tyre, says Toyo, “combines excellent road holding and high speed stability with comfortable ride quality.” Meanwhile Toyota and Nissan have fitted the Tranpath TAA14/11 on their Rav4 and X-Trail. It too, says Toyo, runs quietly, delivers a smooth ride, and provides all-round quality.
