Temporary Positions Eliminated at Michelin Dundee
Local media sources indicate that a number of temporary staff at Michelin’s factory in Dundee have lost their jobs. The Evening Telegraph states it was contacted on March 25 by a worker affected by this decision, who complained that the company was eliminating positions at the Dundee site starting with temporary workers. Plant personnel manager Ian Peart confirmed to the newspaper that staff are indeed being let go, but claimed Michelin’s decision was not related to the current economic crisis.
According to Peart, no conflict exists between the layoffs and the company’s efforts to manage a way through the downturn without eliminating jobs. “Are we laying off temporary staff? The answer to that is yes,” he commented. “Does this conflict with what we have said before? The answer is no. Is it anything to do with the current economic situation. The answer is again no.
“We have a small number of people on temporary contracts for a variety of reasons,” he added. “When the temporary labour is no longer required, when the contract has come to an end, they’ll be released. There are also people on a probation period on temporary contracts and, if their work is not up to the necessary standard, they will be released. That is what’s happening now.”
Peart did not comment on the number of workers to be laid off.
