‘Stash of Cash’ Found Within Tyre
Given the current state of our banks it is hardly surprising that people may consider alternative places to safe keep their valuables – inside the mattress is a tried and proven location, and numerous other spots around the house may also serve nicely as an ersatz safety deposit box. But inside a tyre? It’s probably not a great idea…
During the course of their rubbish collection duties, three highway workers in the US state of Indiana stumbled across what looked like just another abandoned tyre. However, when they attempted to pick up the offending item they found much more than they bargained for. The truck tyre broke apart as they handled it, revealing, in the words of the Indianapolis Star newspaper, a “massive stash of cash” – more than US$100,000 in total.
Police believe the tyre and the cash had been lying by the roadside for some time. Indeed, the soggy condition of the money, some of which was rolled up and wrapped with rubber bands, delayed the counting of the tyre stash. The money is most likely the proceeds of a drug transaction, although other reasons for its secretion within a tyre – including as a safe haven during the banking crisis – cannot be ruled out at this stage.
