That’s a Mighty Fine Looking Vehicle Yer Got There, Pardner…
You would be forgiven for thinking the ride qualities on the Hummer H3 were a little wooden….One particular specimen, parked in London during October, is equipped with wheels and ‘tyres’ not commonly seen in these parts for the best part of a century. But this vehicle doesn’t represent a backwards step from the manufacturer of plus-sized 4x4s – the wooden wagon wheels fitted to the Hummer parked in the Old Burlington road are there for art’s sake.
Artist Matthew Harrison’s latest project is titled Hummer, and will be parked opposite the Royal Academy of Arts for the duration of the fifth Zoo Art Fair, which runs between October 17 and 20. Harrison is exhibiting on behalf of East London gallery, Limoncello, and the artist has combined the American off-road vehicle with ‘Wild West’ wooden wheels to create a sculpture that is said to be a mixture of art, engineering and motoring. For Harrison, the crux of the ‘Hummer’ is formed by both its ‘being’ and its afterlife.
“Similar to Hummer, this sculpture really is like no other,” quipped Hummer’s Corin Richards. “As well as being built for action, the H3 certainly has a unique, iconic style. We were thrilled to be approached by Matthew and glad to be supporting his work at the Zoo Art Fair.”
In its everyday guise the Hummer H3 comes supplied with wheels featuring a lower wood content, such as the 16×7.5in chrome wheels fitted to the Luxury model. A Wild West option kit is believed to be not in the pipeline.
