Welsh Tyre Check Shows 58 Per Cent Of Tyres “Dangerous”
A free public safety event throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf recently tested 475 tyres and found that 275 (58 per cent) could cause car accidents. Local press reports described the tyres as “dangerous or faulty.” 65 tyres were recommended to be replaced as a matter of urgency.
Trading standards officers took their public information caravan on a tour of RCT, carrying out tyre tests and offering advice. They found that the four main danger areas were tread, air pressure, excess wear and damage to the tyre.
What proved just as concerning for RCT council staff was that the majority of visitors to the event were elderly or lone females – two of the most vulnerable groups of motorists.
Councillor John David, cabinet member for communities, said:
“Many of [the motorists] expressed their surprise at the findings, but the simple solution is tyres must be checked regularly as part as the ongoing maintenance of cars.”
