Pirelli Shuts Burton Plant too
Having temporarily shut its Carlisle plant after a fault with the building’s boiler, Pirelli has also sent home its workforce at the company’s other UK factory in Burton.
Pirelli told its workers that production would be suspended while checks were performed on the company’s boiler system. However, there is as yet no word on when the workforce will be able to return to the plant.
National newspapers have reported that morale among workers at the factory is at a low. Speculation has grown as to the possibility that the closures could be a sign of more permanent measures, though Pirelli’s spokesman strived to quash rumours in a statement: “Following an inspection of one of the Pirelli Carlisle factory boilers, the company has taken the precautionary measure of conducting a thorough inspection of its remaining boilers. In order to do this it has been necessary to temporarily cease tyre production and material manufacturing at both the company sites in Burton and Carlisle.”
In addition, a further statement underlined the temporary nature of the closure, claiming that the company is working “to try and minimise the impact upon our employees and hopes to resume production as soon as possible.”
