Avon Tyre GT Takes Class Behind the Scenes
Engineers in the Avon Tyre Crew for the company-sponsored British GT Championship gave youngsters participating in the Young Engineers initiative the chance to glimpse their potential future careers.
The initiative is designed to encourage children to think about the importance of engineering and to develop an interest in the field to take through to higher education and beyond. Avon’s engineers showed the 19 11-year olds of All Saints Junior School in Hastings the ropes at the event at Thruxton race track on Sunday, June 29, which presented the ideal opportunity to promote this aspiration to the younger generation.
After watching the GT cars – whose names included Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin – the youngsters got to spend time with the Avon Tyres crew, which supplies race tyres to every car in the GT, in addition to the British Formula 3, Formula Ford and Caterham Superlight championships.
Avon Tyres’ British GT Sales Manager, Brian Davies, and Technical Engineer, Gavin Johnson, were on hand with the rest of the Avon crew at Thruxton to explain to the school group how they work with different tyre compounds and pressures, and the work involved in fitting 1,000 tyres every race weekend.
All Saints school teacher, Faith Rew said, “We had an amazing time at Thruxton, and everyone made our day very special. The talk at Avon Tyres was enjoyed by all the children and was interesting and informative. The crew was super and the children wore their Avon Tyres caps with pride!”
