Darfur Tyre Bandits Attack Peacekeeping Convoy
Armed bandits fired at a peacekeeping convoy in Sudan’s trouble Darfur region in mid-March, according to officials. The twist in this story is on this occasion the attackers were after tyres. Five international police officers were reportedly injured after their vehicle flipped over during the ambush, a spokesman for the UN/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) told the Reuters news agency. The UNAMID force is reportedly operating at less than a third of its promised strength, with just over 7,000 troops and 1,600 police officers on the ground.
