WRAP Suggests Using Tyre Rubber in Flooring/Plaster
New flooring screed and plaster products incorporating rubber from recycled tyres are being developed as part of a WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) funded project. The products, are generically known as Rubbercrete. North Yorkshire-based Walltransform has developed the new products in conjunction with a rubber-based top coat which can be used alongside the flooring screed. There is 70 per cent rubber crumb incorporated in the plaster and 30 per cent rubber crumb in the flooring screed. Rubbercrete will also be available in a rapid set mix design, which incorporates 35 per cent rubber crumb and dries within two to three hours.
The Rubbercrete products, for which there is already commercial interest, are currently undergoing the testing required to receive certification from the BBA (British Board of Agrément). This certification will enable the products to be marketed in the UK.
Glenn Melvin, Managing Director of Walltransform, commented: “This is indeed a significant use for tyre derived rubber which will have a considerable impact in the construction industry in the UK and beyond. We greatly appreciate all WRAP’s invaluable assistance.”
