400 Tonne Tyre Pile Ablaze in Scotland
A fresh reminder for the industry about the importance of finding efficient and green ways to deal with the UK’s annual mountain of end of life tyres has come courtesy of a 400 tonne pile of burning tyres in Scotland. A fire that began on the evening of January 20 is steadily pumping thick, black smoke into the North Lanarkshire skies and has disrupted rail services on the mail line between Lanark and Cumbernauld.
The tyres were stored in a yard formerly operated by the Shanks Group, which was involved in landfill activities in the region before the disposal of its UK landfill and related power operations in 2004. Fire services expect the blaze to continue for several days.
