Twenty-One and Still Growing
In 2006 Summit celebrated 20 years in business at Coventry. And after two decades the company is continuing to expand, with 2007 marking the opening of another depot in East Anglia. This new facility is expected to further improve the level of service Summit provides customers in the region.
Summit was founded in 1986 by Peter Summers, a man who had already spent the majority of his career in the tyre industry. Seeking a location at the heart of the country, Summers selected Coventry as the site for his new firm. The business specialised in industrial tyres and wheels to the fork truck and skid steer replacement and original equipment markets. Operating in a niche market, Summit quickly established itself as a leader in its field for product and advice in this specialist area. Furthermore, Summit ensured that it held stock of products that other wholesalers and distributors didn’t, thus building a reputation that is still enjoyed today – if the tyre or application is unusual, the likelihood is that Summit has got it.
As the company grew a national distribution operation was set up, offering with a fast and efficient delivery service predominantly using Summit’s own vehicles. In February 2003 Summit was acquired by new owners who held the objective of expanding the business further into off-road applications. Whilst still maintaining a strength in industrial solid tyres, the future development of the business was to be in the agricultural and construction tyre and wheel markets.
Integral to Summit’s success has been its relationships with existing and new suppliers, such as the Indian TVS Eurogrip brand, the Gumasol solid tyre brand and the Globestar solid tyre from Sri Lanka. Early in 2003 Summit acquired the UK distributorship for GKNFad wheels, a brand targeted at the off road industrial, agricultural and construction machinery sectors.
From its central location at Junction 3 on the M6 Summit can deliver to all parts of the country within 72 hours of receiving an order. This level of service, which extends to just in time, camban and overnight deliveries for tyres, wheels and complete tyre and wheel assemblies, has been rewarded with contracts to supply some major and well known brands in the marketplace.
The range of tyres and wheels Summit can supply ex-stock suit most industrial, agricultural and construction sector needs up to 28-inches, depending upon the application. If a particular item is not in stock it can be obtained fast enough to be able to maintain our delivery guarantees. The company’s new 10,000 square foot depot is expected to support this latest step in Summit’s expansion in the agricultural tyre market.
TVS, the Indian tyre manufacturer, has worked closely with Summit to introduce new sizes to compliment the existing range with the Eurogrip brand. A full list is available from Summit on request. Additionally a new range of budget implement tyres has been introduced and has proven to be successful.
