‘Clean Up Or Close Down’ Ultimatum To Salvage Yard
In Vermont, the state authorities have issued a ‘clean up your act or be shut down’ ultimatum to a salvage yard that has operated for 10 years without a licence. Among the complaints are a lack of adequate fencing and serious mismanagement of hazardous wastes, including oil, antifreeze and lead acid batteries. A major cause for concern is a tyre pile, estimated to contain some 50,000 tyres; as well as a potential fire hazard, the pile creates a risk of mosquito-borne diseases, said the authorities.
