ATSE Locks Onto Wheel Security
ATS Euromaster has teamed up with gas distribution specialist BOC to tackle the major industry-wide issue of wheel loss on commercial vehicles, which is the cause of between 150 and 400 incidents per year, according to Brake. The project has seen the creation of a training DVD which demonstrates best practice in wheel security, illustrating the correct procedures for preparing, removing, inspecting and fitting the most common types of commercial vehicle wheels.
The DVD is being utilised as a valuable interactive learning tool within specific ATS Euromaster technician training courses, which help to ensure consistency in knowledge and skills nationwide. It is also being shown to BOC engineers, technicians, transport team leaders and over 1,000 drivers. Copies are also being supplied to the 40 independent dealers and workshops which carry out maintenance for BOC, in areas of the country where there is not an in-house workshop.
“This is the first time we have produced a training DVD in conjunction with a customer, but at this early stage the reaction from staff has been very encouraging. Its true success will be judged in the months to come, with the aim of completely eliminating incidents of loose wheels or wheel loss,” says Peter Fairlie, National Sales Director – Truck, ATS Euromaster.
Chris Staples, Manager – Fleet Engineering & Maintenance Operations, BOC, adds: “I really can’t emphasise the importance of this training tool enough. It tackles a major industry-wide issue and reinforces the already rigorous standards we demand across our entire maintenance operation. Testament to its significance is that from July 2007, all technicians working on one of our vehicles will be expected to have seen this production.”
BOC operates a Michelin tyre policy serviced exclusively in the UK by ATS Euromaster, with a mixed fleet of over 950 commercial vehicles, ranging from car derived vans to 44 tonne tractor units and trailers. Vehicles are spread across 100 locations throughout the UK and Ireland, varying in size from small non-manned premises with one vehicle up to large distribution sites with 100+ trucks.
