Variety Act
South Wales based manufacturer ACT Wheels started 2007 on a high in January when it clinched the contract to supply wheels to Stagecoach as part of the bus operator’s maintenance of its 7000-strong fleet.
ACT supplies steel wheels for HGV/PSV vehicles through to off-road, site and agricultural applications in a range of sizes from wheels to fit eight-inch mower and forklift trucks through to 35-inch earthmover wheels. The firm has CAD design and production capacity to meet the needs of OEMs and operators, meaning it can handle anything from one-off replacements and conversions to production batches.
The company’s regular work includes conversions to meet Channel Island vehicle regulations by altering wheel off-sets, conversions from twin wheels to single wheels and alloy swapover packages for truck dealers. Similarly, low loaders and other vehicles running multi-piece tubed wheels can be converted to modern, single-piece wheels with a tubeless tyre – an option that is much easier to obtain and maintain.
So how does a company manage such a broad variety of work? According to manager Wayne Collins, “We have such a range of work it is sometimes difficult to know which is the major activity. As a result we have expanded our factory and capacity in the year to meet the expectations of our customers”.
