New ContiContact Run-Flat for BMW X5
The BMW X5 is to become the first vehicle to be OE fitted with new UHP summer run-flat tyres developed by Continental. Known as the ContiContact UHP, the new tyres will be available on the BMW as an all-round fitment in size 255/50 R 19 XL or can be combined with the 284/45 R 19 XL on the rear axle.
The ContiContact UHP has been developed especially to meet the requirements of SUV and SAVs (sports activity vehicles), and are W speed rated, tested to be safe at speeds up to 270km/h (168 mph). The tyre features an asymmetrical design with the inner and outer shoulder sections differing in design, which Continental claims allows the tread pattern to be ‘subdivided’ according to the ‘tasks’ it carries out.
As a result, Conti states that the ContiContact UHP can handle at its peak even during extreme driving conditions and provides high grip during acceleration and short braking distances on wet and dry roads, combined with traction on poorer road surfaces. Furthermore, with the inclusion of SSR run-flat technology (Self Supporting Runflat Tire) the ContiContact UHP can continue running at a top speed of 50 mph for a limited distance. Other features include wide drainage channels between the tread blocks to facilitate water dispersion during wet weather driving, and circumferential ribs in the tread’s centre, which provide a level of stiffness required for good traction during acceleration and braking.
Continental has also announced that it will be supplying BMW with suitable SSR run-flat winter tyres for the X5 by this autumn.
