Run Flat Technology – an Indian Variation
An inventor in India has come up with a novel alternative to run flat tyre technology. Designed for motor scooters and cycles, the new invention, known as the modular portable castor wheel stand or, more simply, as the ‘X Wheel’, makes it easier for riders to keep their vehicle moving in the event of a sudden puncture.
The portable mechanical device can be fitted onto the rear wheel of any two-wheeler with a flat tyre, enabling it to be pushed with ease. “It’s like two wheels,” explains X Wheel creator Anant Limaye, “one on each side of the rear tyre, acting like a stand and allowing easy movement of the vehicle with a flat tyre.” Limaye reports that he has also invested £175,000 towards and is in the final stage of developing a similar product to be used on a vehicle’s front wheel.
Limaye claims he gained inspiration for the X Wheel when he witnessed a motorcyclist – with wife and two children in tow – straining to push his disabled vehicle along the road. The product has been granted an Indian patent and Limaye plans to negotiate with cycle makers and dealers across India in the hop of having the X Wheel included on their standard accessory lists.
The X Wheel will become commercially available on March 15, and will retail for RS375 (£4.40).
