Pocket Rocket Tyres from Metzeler
Some motorcycling purists may scoff at the motor scooter with its tiny engine capacity and decidedly un-macho appearance as little more than an appliance on wheels. Perhaps at best an admission of its merit as a cheap means of getting from A to B may grudgingly be granted. But scooters have developed in leaps and bounds since the days of the earliest Vespas and their kin, and today’s maxi-scooters provide a much more comfortable ride and than previous generation offerings, making them suitable, perhaps even enjoyable, to ride both around town and out on the open road.
And just as the scooter has come into its own as a performance machine, so have scooter tyres. Many riders of the latest crop of high performance scooters are
looking for a tyre in which performance and reliability go hand in hand – and Germany’s Metzeler, Pirelli’s second brand, has attempted to meet both criteria without unduly compromising either. When writing the design brief for their new tyre, the Feelfree, Metzeler stated the tyre should provide for safe driving in all weather conditions through excellent wet and dry grip, while at the same time offering riders superior riding comfort and strong performance.
The tyre’s diagonal carcass has been computer optimised and manufacturer’s tests indicate the design employed provides high stability at a low mass. The tyre’s reduced weight should be reflected in minimised strain during driving, which in turn means increased handling agility even at higher speeds.
Metzeler in particular point out that the Feelfree offers optimal riding enjoyment when fitted to maxi scooters. Utilising the proven profile design of Metzler’s Roadtec Z6 sport-touring tyre and a newly developed rubber compound, the Feelfree achieves, according to Pirelli Metzeler Moto UK’s James Worland, “superb ride comfort, long mileage and even wear.”
The Feelfree slots nicely into the Metzeler scooter tyre range, providing a high-end product for those wanting just a little bit more from their scooter than the average rider. The Feelfree, in offering an enjoyable ride and a high level of safety, seems assured of continuing Metzeler’s long tradition of successful scooter tyres.
