Group Seeks Cash to Stop Tyre Burning
Cement producer Cemex’s use of tyres as a substitute fuel, as previous reported by Tyres & Accessories, has run into opposition from what has been described as a local pressure group. The group, which calls itself Rugby in Plume, is planning on submitting a petition to the House of Lords for a judicial review of the decision to grant Cemex a permit to burn tyres as fuel.
The group claim Environment Agency findings that show a cut in the emission of some gases during trials are incorrect, and they believe tyre burning will result in a sharp rise in the emissions of other potentially harmful substances. They also fear that the decision will open the door for other materials to be burned at the Cemex plant and at neighbouring facilities.
The group needs to come up with £25,000 to cover legal fees before they can mount a challenge to the ruling. Spokeswoman Lilian Pallikaropoulos said: “We have got the House of Lords to agree to accept the case, but we have to find £25,000 as a deposit. “We asked the House of Lords if we could have that waived because this case is in the public interest,” she added, “but the Environment Agency have already written to the House of Lords saying it is a private case and should not be waived.”
