Crackdown on Tyre-law Dodgers
Bradford Council and the Environment Agency have teamed up for spot checks on 37 small garages in Bradford. The crackdown on illegal tyre dumping follows the completion of the introduction of legislation banning discarded tyres from being dumped at landfill sites.
Inspectors found three unlicensed sites. Warning letters will be sent to 10 garages who failed either to produce correct documentation or comply with oil storage regulations. Inspectors will also issue five garages with notices to store tyres correctly on site.
According to the Craven Herald, between July 2005, and June this year there were 62 cases of tyre fly-tipping in Bradford. Many of those are thought to be the result of rogue waste carriers being paid by garages to get rid of the tyres.
Tony Nothers, owner of Tyre Economy on Canal Road, Bradford passed the inspection, But he suggested that it is sometimes difficult to keep up with changes in legislation.
