Safety Seal Repair Tests on Run-Flat and High Speed Tyres
Safety Seal recently conducted high speed tests on Run Flat and High Speed Tyres that had been repaired with Safety Seal tyre repair material. The repair of Run Flat tyres has been the subject of much discussion and there have been different positions taken by manufacturers depending on the type of construction and performance ratings of the tyre.
Goodyear allows for the repair of its Run Flat tyres and the Safety Seal test was made in accordance with ECE-R 30 at the TÜV Nord facility in Essen. The tyre was taken up to the maximum rated speed (240 km/h) in steps over a period of one hour and immediately followed by an additional one hour test with the tyre totally deflated at a speed of 80 km/h. A similar test was conducted with the tyre first run without pressure and immediately followed by the high speed test with the tyre inflated. In both tests the tyre was first punctured and repaired with Safety Seal.
An additional test was a conducted on a high speed tyre – Pirelli P Zero Rosso 225/45 R17 Y (for speeds up to 300 km/h). Pirelli also approves the repair of this tyre. It is important to note that not all producers manufacture a tyre that has a construction that makes it possible to be repaired.
The test method was again according to ECE-R 30 which calls for the tyre to be taken up to speeds of 300 km/h in steps over a period of one hour. In addition, Safety Seal ordered the tyre be subjected to an additional test of speeds up to 320 km/h.
All tyres were punctured and repaired with Safety Seal tyre repair in accordance with TÜV guidelines. The repaired tyres successfully passed the test without any adverse effects.
