WRAP Launches Used Tyre Open Tender

An open tender has been launched by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) inviting bids which will continue the momentum of developing and extending the UK’s markets for used tyres. WRAP says its aim is to provide up to 100 per cent funding support for trial and demonstration projects using rubber from UK used tyres for a wide range of construction-related applications which will have already undergone proven research and development, but have yet to be commercialised.

It is hoped the work will include new and innovative trial and demonstration projects that fall broadly within the construction sector including (but not limited to) civil engineering groundworks, building construction & products, landscaping and horticulture as construction work remediation, road construction projects and products, play & sports surfaces and river & sea defences. WRAP cannot support any project involving energy from waste.

An integral part of the projects will be to gain key industry approvals and certification for the recycled rubber material or product being developed.

Steve Waite, Materials Project Manager (Tyres) at WRAP, said: “The pressure is on for the UK to find new end markets for used tyres as the deadline of July 2006 – when whole and shredded tyres will be banned from disposal to landfill in the UK – gets closer. We hope that this open tender will build on the work that WRAP’s Tyres Programme has already achieved and would encourage any interested parties to submit an application.”
