Automechanika Shanghai 2006 – Twice the Size of 2004’s Show
Automechanika Shanghai 2006, which is being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from 30 November to 2 December “will be twice the size of its predecessor in 2004”, say the organisers. 23,000 square metres of space in two halls has been earmarked for the show.
The 2004 event was the show’s debut and the fact that National pavilions from Germany, Singapore and Turkey have already confirmed their participation in this year’s show demonstrates the growing importance of China in the world automotive sector.
China has made rapid advances in economic growth and consumer affluence and this is reflected in the growth of the automotive sector. The country is already the second largest automobile market in the world, with total vehicle sales in 2005 reaching 5.92 million – up 15 per cent on 2004. China is also the third largest vehicle producer globally, with production reaching 5.7 million units last year.
Local and central government are paying close attention to the environmental impact of this growth in vehicle numbers – for example, the municipal government of Shanghai has introduced emissions standards for vehicles, which have to be certified. Those which do not comply (and so far only 40 per cent of Shanghai’s vehicles have achieved the required standard) will have their use restricted.
All this is good news for those companies involved in the manufacture and marketing of automotive parts, components, maintenance and service equipment and the organisers are promoting Automechanika Shanghai 2006 as the ideal showcase in what is arguably the world’s most exciting automotive market.
