Toyo Promotes Tyres in Mod Prod Series
As far as motorsport is concerned, Toyo targets potential consumers by sponsoring the Toyo Tyres Modified Production Saloon Car Championship. This year’s winner, Gareth Porter, had more reason to celebrate than most having driven a 240BHP Peugeot 205 to victory beating the likes of BMWs along the way.
The series, affectionately known amongst drivers and fans as ‘Mod Prod’ is said to have been a “massive” hit with spectators due to the close racing, evocative cars and giant killing antics of some of the lower classed entrants. The series has even been described as “one of the most accessible and friendly of championships.”
This eclectic mix of machinery made for some shock results throughout the season with Class D shining star Denis Bassom leading the entire championship for two months of the year, despite his Toyota’s 1600 engine packing a huge displacement deficit against his peers
Better still, the generous regulations allow shoestring specials to regularly humble big budget 400BHP monsters. Funnily enough some of the cars on the grid were bought through e-Bay!
Gerry Cain, winner of the first and last round explained the appeal from a drivers perspective: “This is such a friendly series! A great example is Class A winner, Neal Philpotts suffering severe gearbox problems at Brands Hatch in qualifying. Spannering away beside him to get him on the grid was his ‘arch rival’ Nick Williams. Where else would you see that?”
Toyo Tyres marketing director, Mike Rignall has been delighted with the high-octane entertainment the series has produced this year. With every competitor reliant on the tenacious grip from the control Toyo Proxes T1-R and some epic performances, he has a lot to be happy about. “What a fantastic season,” he enthuses. “We’ve had the lot – drama, suspense and some real dogfights. Toyo have always offered real-world products that can perform in extraordinary situations and this series really demonstrates that. The sheer variety of cars, weights and power means that we can showcase an entire range and prove that our off-the-shelf road products are capable of performing exceptionally in a competition environment.”
