Mobile Commerce: The Next Step?
Dekk Partner, Scandinavia’s largest independent dealer group, runs a system that integrates stock availability, the national vehicle registration database and even automatically sends sms text service. The concept of receiving a text reminder might sound a little alien to the UK tyre trade, but it certainly has potential. Tyres & Accessories spoke to a number of Scandinavian dealers, all of which were pleased with the systems success.
“When you send a text to a customer saying you have booked them an appointment for 10 October 9:00am, then he will be there like it’s a dentist or doctor’s appointment,” one Norwegian tyre dealer told T&A.
The cleverest thing about the system, which was developed by Norwegian programmers, Norbits, is its complete integration. In practice this means that when a customer comes into have their tyres changed, the fitter need only enter the car’s registration number. The system can then present information on all the products that are compatible with the vehicle, with the option of cross-referencing this with what is actually in stock at that branch or branches close by.
The software also manages Dekk Partner outlets’ seasonal tyre hotel system. So, once again, when it comes to switching to summer-tyre time after a cold winter, the dealer can text the driver, advising them of the fuel savings that can be achieved with summer tyres.
A more conventional method
However, not everybody will have the access, capital or know-how to install such a system. So in the meantime, there are more conventional alternatives. Image Software, the producer of a standalone label printing system, believes its technology can provide garages with a low-cost way of encouraging customers to make a return visit to your business.
Solo is an “out-of-the-box” solution designed for printing labels containing information without the need for a PC. Such a system provides garages with a simple means of printing window stickers containing details such as service due dates or mileage, oil grade and other messages or promotions.
The Solo solution comprises a thermal transfer printer, a compact standalone keyboard, and Solo Studio – Image’s exclusive PC design program. The software allows label templates containing text, images, barcodes and other information to be designed off-site using a familiar Windows interface. These templates can be transferred to the SOLO keyboard which can be detached from the PC for use on-site.
“Solo is an ideal solution for the garage industry,“ explains Image chairman, John Poole. “Service reminders are a great low-cost way to advertise and retain customers. The solution provides a professional and durable alternative to handwritten labels that won’t smear and fade over time.”
