Michelin Adds New Urban Application Line
(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America (MNA) rolled out a new urban application truck tire, which it claims delivers “up to a 40 per cent improvement in removal miles.” The XZU3 line was introduced at the American Public Transportation Association Expo 2005 in Dallas.
“The XZU3 tyre is designed for urban operations involving frequent stopping and starting, such as transit buses, delivery vehicles and sanitation trucks,” said Michael Burroughes, product portfolio manager for MNA’s Michelin Americas Truck Tires unit. Burroughes said the line will be offered in two sizes – 305/85R22.5 and 305/75R24.5 – and replaces Michelin’s MZU2 line.
The XZU3 has a wider (by 16mm) and deeper (by 2/32nds) tread than the XZU2 for 24 per cent greater tread volume, and features Michelin’s patented Matrix siping technology for wet traction. Michelin said the tyre’s “large, solid shoulder” provides “outstanding resistance to high scrub applications.” The tyre also has extra-thick sidewalls to help resist curb scrub.
