Dunweedin Hopes ‘Green’ Garden Will Win Prime Minister Award
Dunweedin Ltd has given around two tonnes of rubber chippings to Kingsmead Primary School in Northwich, Cheshire. The colourful landscaping chips, made from scrap tyres, have been used to create a recycled garden with decorated flowerbeds and safe playing areas for pupils.
Bob Jones, of Dunweedin Ltd, based in Ellesmere Port, hopes that it will support the school’s bid to win a building and sustainability award from the Prime Minister Tony Blair. Kingsmead is one of 15 projects in the running for the annual Prime Minister’s Better Public Building award from an original list of 140.
The school is already committed to sustainability, using solar power to provide heat, rainwater recycling facilities to flush the toilets and environmental gardens for teaching ‘green issues’. Even the building has been constructed using a striking timber design.
Headteacher Catriona Stewart said: “Colourful rubber chippings, made from recycled tyres, have been used to landscape the gardens. It’s a great idea because rubber is a natural and everlasting material which is kind to both children and plants.”
