Alonso Becomes Youngest World Champion
Renault driver Fernando Alonso has become the youngest ever Formula One world champion after coming third in the Brazilian Grand Prix. “I am the youngest champion in Formula One and now I need to find new targets because this one is done,” said the 24-year-old.
Alonso’s achievement also brought Michael Schumacher’s five-year reign as F1 champion to an end. “Everyone wants to beat Michael on the track because it is the same as beating (Lance) Armstrong in the Tour de France,” added Alonso, who finished one place ahead of Schumacher in Brazil. “To beat Michael this year was really an extra happiness for me.”
The podium was once again an all-Michelin affair with McLaren drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikonnen taking the first two places. Michael Schumacher’s fourth placed Ferrari was the only Bridgestone shod vehicle in the top eight.
